Monday and Tuesday, October 17 & 18: Rakki Hausu (Japanese House) in 1/4" scale, taught by long time teacher Karen Cary

CHIPPENDALE CORNER CUPBOARD in 1” SCALE

Geoff Wonnacott, an IGMA Fellow from England, makes exquisite furniture. He has offered to teach a beautiful Chippendale Corner Cupboard on Stand. This fine example of Chippendale furniture would sit gracefully in the corner of any elegant late 18th century setting and provide a safe display for precious china.

From a prepared cutting list of timbers, each student will construct the cabinet and stand. The legs will be tapered, the spade feet formed and the lower tier shelf shaped. The door will be made and glazed with decorative beading applied before hinging into place. Delicate fretwork will be cut both for the lower brackets and the molded broken pediment. A finish will be applied and brass key plate fitted.

Completion in the allocated time is likely, however full detailed instructions accompany the class.

Date: Monday and Tuesday, October 17th & 18th
Time:  9am - 5pm
Cost: $290

Chippendale furniture is considered the royalty of antique furniture, and Thomas Chippendale produced it in England. He wrote “Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker’s Director”, a portfolio of English furniture design templates and one of the first furniture design books. Other cabinet makers in England and America copied his designs extensively. He used elements of Rococo, Chinese, Gothic and Neoclassical styles, so his pieces fit well with almost any other style of furniture.

Note: A reasonable skill and ability would be an advantage. (Intermediate or experienced skill level)

Student Supplies and Tools Needed: All tools and equipment will be provided by the instructor, however, please feel free to bring your own small tool box if preferred.

RAKKI HAUSU (LUCKY HOUSE), JAPANESE HOUSE IN 1/4" SCALE

Date: Monday and Tuesday, October 17th & 18th
Time:  9am - 5pm
Cost: $225

Karen Cary, always one of our most popular 1/4” scale workshop teachers, has developed this outstanding Japanese house and furnishings for a Good Sam Featured Workshop. If you love 1/4” scale, you’ll love this house.

Situated on the slopes of the lush green mountains of Kyushu rests a traditional 3-story Japanese family home. The home has 9 rooms, the i-ma or living “space”, a kitchen, dining room, bedroom, bathroom, three hallways and an oshire or attic, allowing you to choose more traditional furnishings for your home.

The house features Shoji screen doors and windows that actually slide open and closed. The Shoji windows and doors are made with real rice paper, a Japanese architectural tradition for more than 1000 years.

This house is unique in that two of the rooms are not viewed from the back but are viewed instead using windows and doors. The house is built floor by floor and the floors can be kept separate until all interior decorating is finished. The stilted Veranda and Entry Arch add an additional touch of realism.

Several room sets of furniture come with the workshop (bedroom, dining room, kitchen, bathroom and living “space”). Stairs and roofing as well as printed Tatami for the floors are included. Note that a dragon and a two-dimensional carved Crane Entry door are included for Good Luck!

The House is 8” wide x 5” deep x 8 1/4” tall. All wood pieces are laser cut out of basswood. An acrylic display cube will be provided as a gift as well as other surprises.

Experience Level: All levels welcome
